Facebook's Advanced Settings for Chat

Facebook have revised its chat settings for the chat sidebar, now you will be able to handle your visibility on chat more efficiently with these advanced settings.These advanced settings give you a few different visibility options with which you can:

• Stay online (available) to most friends and go offline (unavailable) to specific friends or friend lists.
• Stay offline (unavailable) to most friends and go online (available) to specific friends or friend lists.
• Go offline (unavailable) to all friends.

To Change the Facebook chat settings Click on chat gear[] at bottom of sidebar and then click on Advanced Settings....

Then a pop will appear with Advanced Chat Settings:

There are three options:

• All your friends see you except.. : In this you can fill the name of the Person(s) / List(s) to whom you want to appear offline . If you want to appear online to all then leave this box blank.
• Only some friends see you.. : With this you can go online to only specific people that you enlist in the box below it. If keep the box empty, you will get offline to all.
• No One sees you (Go Offline ): This is as simple as Go Offline option and you will get offline to all.

If you get stucked somewhere and let things as default, then select "All your friends see you except.. " and then keep the box empty and click Save.

Quick Tip:If you want to go offline to any one person quickly, then click the  [at the top of the chat window], and select Go Offline to X.

How to Disable the Facebook New Chat Sidebar and Return to the old good normal Facebook Chat

For all those users are annoyed from Facebook's New chat side bar. Today i am going to explain the tweak with which you can disable the newly introduced Facebook new Chat Sidebar and return back to the old good normal Facebook Chat. To get rid of Facebook New SideBar and to Get enjoyed with Facebook old chat we will be using the FB Chat Sidebar Disabler Extensions(for Google Chrome )/Add-on(for Mozilla Firefox & Opera).

Few Instructions:

1. After installation press F5 into all Facebook tabs/windows, or restart your browser.
2. To toggle between old-style chat and new-style chat, use the Options menu in the buddy list.
3. To get Facebook video chat, just open a normal chat tab and then click the video icon in the title bar of the conversation.

How to Go Offline in Facebook new chat sidebar

Users who have been upgraded to Facebook New Chat sidebar system of chat, might have finding difficulties in controlling the settings of the chat. Users are unable to find the settings of the the chat to Go offline as the settings button of the Facebook new Chat Side Bar is not working properly.



To solve this problem ,I have a simple trick for you all.First of all Login to your Facebook Account:

• Click on this link http://www.facebook.com/presence/popout.php
• This will open the Pop-out chat in a new window.

• On top of left side bar ,you will be able to access the Chat Options, similar to the options of previous Chat Box system of Facebook.
• Click on Options.
• Then click Go offline.
• You are done ,you may close this tab/window now.

Update[7 july 2011]: As now the Settings Button of  the Facebook New Chat SideBar is working perfectly,

So To Go OffLine In Facebook New Chat Sidebar

• Click On Settings Button On bottom right of the Facebook chat sidebar and then un-check Available to chat .

Uncheck - Available to Chat

• To Go online again on Facebook Chat , then click Available.

Using this Facebook Chat Sidebar Settings Button you can also hide the Chat Sidebar and also alter ,to play sound when you receive message, But If you want more setting For you Facebook Chat like Options for your Friend list etc. Then you have to Pop-Out your chat using the link given above in this post and can access the Facebook chat options like in the Old Facebook chat box system.

Facebook New Chat SideBar

Facebook Launched new Facebook Chat Sidebar in replacement to previous Chat Box system.Some of the Facebook users may have got this upgrade

from the Facebook and others will get this in coming few days.Below is the screen shot of the new Facebook ChatSidebar. The changes made by Facebook during this upgrade are:   

Facebook New Chat SideBar

Contacts are shown on basis of their chat message activity with you.
Names of Offline friends and Online friends(Green Dot is shown along with their name) are shown in combined list of chat contacts.
There is search box provided below to search your friends/contacts(offline or online).
The online friends matrix shown on the left side had been also removed.
A good thing about this upgrade is that users can directly send message to offline friends by clicking on their name from Chat sidebar rather than going to Messages from left sidebar

Some points on which Facebook should rethink on its new Facebook Chat Sidebar are:

• Scrolling of chat list is not possible ,you have to make a search query to find the friend.
• At first look it creates confusion in the mind of the user , who is online and who is offline.
• The Facebook Chat SideBar has an limit(20) to show friends from the Facebook friend list. So when the number of online friend cross this limit ,then you have to make a search query to find that online friend as there is no scroll there in Facebook chat sidebar
• When you click on any friend then the chat box appears on screen covers the search box provided in it,hence blocks the searching options- This bug has been now fixed by the Facebook.
• The settings button on it is not active till now.
